De-stigmatizing Dementia through Art

........................................................
Time passes and some things fade, like color on a polaroid photo; yet some things remain.
Through a series of visits which lasted over three years in the Marolles, to the Sainte Monique
nursing home and day care center for those suffering of Alzheimers, Sarah Basha created the
‘What Remains’ series. Basha uses the fact that polaroids fade as a metaphor, capturing
moments, pushing us to see beyond what is altered by time or by illness, to light up the
essence of being and focus on what we cherish.
Accompanying the exhibition is an art book. It was created not only as an extension of
the exhibition but also as a piece in itself, a play on paper of the form and colors of the
polaroids. The book printing and binding was a challenge for the traditional offset printers, but
was chosen to physically reinforce the idea of the project which is that despite time passing,
things fading, some things persist.
The complete work offers a glimpse into dementia, celebrating 14 people who have
the illness, and are a reflection of Sarah’s explorations on Memory.
